History Washington

Washington DC’s history is representative of its past as the country’s capital city. The city was founded by George Washington, alongside the Potomac River, and approved to be the capital of the country in 1790.

During the war of 1812, the city was burned, and most of the buildings were damaged.

The White House, Capitol Building and a number of other buildings were rebuilt. In 1902, the city was fully restored to its current beauty with the McMillan Plan. The city has seen a lot of racial segregation till the 1950’s, although; slavery was abandoned by law in 1862. The African American community made the U Street Corridor as their meeting center for political awareness and empowerment.

Long after the abolishment of slavery, the tension between the white people and the African Americans remained high. In 1968, these riots increased due to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. These riots caused the city major damages, the city became unsafe and the activity in the city literally slacked. This continued till the late 1900’s. Most of the neighborhoods revitalized during the late 1990’s.

Washington DC’s history shows a lack of representation from the city’s own residents. It was not until 1961, that the residents had a share in the Electoral College. As Washington DC does not come under any state, the city still does not have voting rights in the Congress. Although, after the 1973 District Act, the city got the right to choose the mayor and the city council and had some control on the city’s governmental affairs.

Native Americans settled in Washington DC around 4000 years back. The Europeans explored the region in the 17th century. The European settlers started settling in and pushed the natives to the east and the west side maintaining their own colonies, the region where Washington DC is now located were mainly wetlands, with no inhabitants.  The east and the west side of the Potomac River continued to grow, where now Virginia and Georgetown exist today.

Washington DC was built out of Maryland and Virginia, in order to avoid the decision as to which state the capital should be assigned out of, Congress approved the designing of a neutral brand new city, with no connection to any one state. The city has been designed by Pierre Charles. The city was named after George Washington, the founder of the city and also the first president of The United States of America.
