Blakesley Hall Museum

The Nightingale Club

There was nowhere to go back then of course and being gay had only just been decriminalised. Public attitudes had yet to change, so the mere fact that these men organised a public place where they could meet up was an incredibly brave move.The first Nightingale was at Camp Hill, established in 1969, and moved to Witton Lane in 1975.

Coombe Abbey

During the dissolution of the monasteries, Coombe Abbey and its lands were surrendered to Dr. London who was sent by Thomas Cromwell. William Eden Nesfield was emplyed to make alterations to the house in 'Gothic Revival' style. The east wing and part of the north wing of the Abbey were demolished and rebuilt in the new style.
