The State Library of New South Wales traces its origins to 1826, with the opening of the Australian Subscription Library. In 1869, the New South Wales Government took over responsibility for the Library and created the Sydney Free Public Library. In 1895 it was renamed the Public Library of New South Wales, and in 1975 it became the State Library of New South Wales.

We are currently updating our Strategic Directions document and workshops are being held with stakeholders and staff. A customer survey was conducted online and within the State Library Building during September 2008. Results of the survey are now being collated. Customers can still make a comment on the SLWA Blog. Strategic Directions 2009-2011 will be available in December 2008 or January 2009.

The Darwin Toy Library aims to provide services to children who are disadvantaged in the community. This includes those with intellectual, physical, emotional and social disabilities; also those who are economically disadvantaged, children from families for whom English is a second language, and also children who are isolated.
