Shopping in Japan
Despite the crowds, the prices here are low and you can find just about everything you need in a hurry. The rush time is usually between 4pm and 6pm as people struggle to buy that last loaf of French bread or leg of lamb. The fish market is actually a good idea to come to late however, as the prices get lower by the minute and you can get a great deal on sashimi. On the second floor is a terrific Japanese crafts shop, as well as the Ultraman store for the more modern gift giver.

The Ginza is Japan's and perhaps Asia's most prestigious shopping area. Many up-market retail shops have their flagship stores here. Mitsukoshi, Matsuya and Matsuzakaya department stores are all located here, as are Yamaha Music shop and the cosmetics giant, Shisiedo. Ginza attracts smart and elegant shoppers and office workers as well as students in T-shirts. There are countless wining and dining places to choose from the reasonable to the outrageously expensive.

A particularly modern, bright and inviting department store, Hankyu offers many popular and familiar brand names, Gap, DKNY, Kenzo, Miyake, Cerruti and Nicole Farhi to name a few. The men's collection is just as good as the women's and the English floor guide is not only comprehensible, but lists everything by brand name. The Yurakucho branch also has a second H2 Sukiyabashi building on the next block (beside the Sony building), which houses more fashion and household goods plus HMV. Shopping is made refreshingly easy here.

Isetan is not only one of the oldest and largest, but also perhaps the most foreigner-friendly department store in Tokyo. Its unique (and free) I club offers non-Japanese shoppers five percent discount on many selected items, plus a monthly newsletter containing the latest promotional information. Isetan also stocks a special range of women's clothing (Clover Shop) and men's wear (Supermale) in slightly larger sizes for those not quite petite enough for the standard Japanese range.
