During the Middle Ages, Piazza del Popolo formed the main entrance to the city for pilgrims and travelers arriving on the Via Flaminia (from the north). It was only when Pope Sixtus V placed the Egyptian obelisk of Ramses II in the center of the square that Piazza del Popolo took on its current function. The obelisk is the tip of the trident formed by the three streets that begin in the square: Via del Corso , Via di Ripetta and Via del Babuino .

The wide avenue Viale Vittor Pisani, from Piazza della Repubblica, brings you to the monumental Central Station of Milan, built between 1912, the date of the tender competition, and 1931, when it was opened. The façade of the station, in Aurisina stone, has a Pharaonic scale that is inevitably compared to Germanic culture.

Built in the 9th century, this church has a 16th-century façade by Sansovino. On the portal there is the portrait of Tommaso Rangone, a benefactor of the church and the first ordinary man to be portrayed in a Venetian church. Due to the work of Sansovino and Alessandro Vittoria, its style today is late Renaissance. A window by Serlio adorns the front of the church, while inside there are numerous paintings by Palma il Giovane.

This is an exceptional example of an Italian-style garden, carefully tended by the Capponi family, who came into possession of it in the seventeenth century. The family completely renovated this old country home which had previously belonged (in the 15th century) to the father of the celebrated sculptor, Rossellino. In the twentieth century the garden was enriched with fountains and statues under the careful guidance of skilled gardeners.
