History Of Dallas

Dallas originated in the year 1841. John Neely Bryan, a lawyer from Tennessee came to open up a trading post at the land above the Trinity River. Bryan settled here and though of building up a town at the merging point of the river where there was a large area of government land. He thought this was an ideal location for a town and made a plan for its development.

The town was close by to the shallow part of the river which was frequented by Native Americans and traders and used as a crossing. There were two highways in the planning which would be passing nearby the town, therefore, lots of tradesmen, farmers and artisans came to settle down in the small new community. Dallas came into being on 1849, and got its name after the vice president of United States George Mifflin Dallas with James Knox Polk being the president at that time. During the civil war of America, Dallas just like other cities also had its share. Dallas was the recruitment center for the state of Texas and a food production center for the confederacy.

The population of Dallas after the construction of the railway line in 1872 reached to 3000 residents and later on in 1873 the Texas and Pacific Railroad got completed. After the completion of the railroad, Dallas became a chief distribution center and a home to bankers, merchants, developers and insurance companies. In the year 1890, Dallas became the biggest city in Texas with 38,000 inhabitants.

Although, the city suffered economic setbacks in the 1970’s throughout the 1980’s, but still Dallas kept growing and flourishing. The city started developing around the ‘Sun Belt’, where new businesses prospered and new industries and jobs were created. The skyline of Dallas is one of the most famous ones in America; it actually started to develop into its present state in the year 1984. Dallas saw a real estate boom in the 1980’s, which encouraged a lot of businesses to move to Dallas to avail the opportunity of such bargains.

Today, Dallas is the third largest city of Texas and continues to grow with a thriving economy. The city has the most number of conventions being held here, it is a center for oil industry and insurance companies. The city has a large number of corporate headquarters of electronics and manufacturing concerns. Dallas, just like all historic cities has had a long way to come; it started off from a small settlement and has today developed into a major city of the United States.
