Ascendant Books
Ascendant Books was established in 1983 by the current owner, Alice Powell, and her former business partner (who amicably left the business three years later to pursue other dreams).The inspiration for the stores name comes from the word ascension, which means to “rise up”. This symbolizes the purpose of the store which is to offer books and other items that can help people grow and learn. At the time of its establishment there were no other metaphysical bookstores in Edmonton as the metaphysical community in Alberta was still fairly small. The first location was shockingly tiny- about the same size as an apartment sized kitchen.
