Library in Calgary

The first Library in Calgary was opened in 1912. In the 1960s a new Library in Calgary was built.

The original first Library was still kept open and was renamed “Memorial Park Branch“. Currently there are 17 Branches of the “Calgary Public Library“. It is still one of the few Libraries in Canada to charge a card registration fee. This is based on the fact that it doesn’t receive a lot of public funding.Even though this Library in Calgary operates on a tight budget.

It runs some great programs for children, teens, adults as well as the seniors. It readily encourages community involvement at all of its branches. They have a kid’s corner and a teen’s zone. All of the branches have a really good atmosphere. It is most enjoyable to just spend a few hours to take advantage of some quiet reading.

They have a very good selection and are well stocked in each of the categories. They have a wonderful historical section which the seniors like to take advantage up. There are ongoing activities for the little ones. The Library feels it is important to spark the interest in reading at a very young age. They young ones certainly like to take advantage of what they offer.

Doucette Library of Teaching Resources

The Faculty of Education renovated the library in 2000 specifically to meet the needs of its new MT teacher-prepration program. It's an attractive and welcoming environment, with a seamless integration of technology and information resources.

Art Libraries Society Of North America

The Art Libraries Society of North America was founded in 1972 at the initiative of Judith Hoffberg by a group of art librarians attending the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago. This group realized that to fulfill the need among art librarians for better communication and cooperation, and to provide a forum for ideas, projects, and programs, an entirely new and separate organization was required. Inspired by the model of the Art Libraries Society, established in 1969 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, ARLIS/NA was created.
