Boston History

The city of Boston was founded in the year 1630; the city was named ‘Boston’ by John Winthrop and Puritan dissidents who came from England to settle here.

The former name of Boston was Shawmet, which was used by the local inhabitants. John Winthrop named the place Boston, as that was the name of his hometown in England, and decided to make this place a permanent settlement.

The very first English immigrant who came to Boston was reverend William Blackstone. He arrived here in the year 1629 and settled in this place called Shawmet. The citizenship rights in Boston could only be endowed by the church till the 1664. Until the 1692, when there used to be witch trials and all sorts of weird activities, the residents had started to form institutions which could help them in formulating a democratic nation.During the next 2 centuries, Boston emerged as an educational and intellectual center. The arrival of statesman and theologians and the foundation of Harvard University and the Boston Latin School transformed Boston to a seat of learning and intellect.

The trade in Boston grew due to the harbor and soon Boston became the foremost and most important commercial center. During the British rule, Boston had a leading ship building industry around the world.Boston actually expanded and grew during the eighteen century, when the settlements around the Boston city became towns, trade increased with oversees countries and mills for iron forging, wool processing and iron logging were built alongside the river.

Resistance from the colonial rule started in the 1730’s, when taxes were increased on the colonies. Thus, the American Revolution began. In 1775, the British troops came to seize the arms and arrest notable revolutionists such as John Hancock and Samuel Adams.Boston prospered towards the end of the 19th century, with the influx of immigrants from all over the world came to settle in Boston. The period of the civil war was also a profitable time, as the production of shoes, weapons, blankets and other things for the fighting troops were manufactured here.

During the times of great depression, Boston also suffered a great deal. The manufacturing concerns of Boston started to get obsolete. However, the service industry continued to prosper in the hub areas.After the Second World War, Boston again emerged as the leading center of high tech and computer industries. MIT and Harvard graduates took hold of business. The services industry continued to grow. The city excelled in the financial sector. Boston has come a long way ahead, today Boston is a full of energy and is the commercial center of the new world. Boston has a rich history, since the day of freedom till today, the city is growing and every day is a new day here in Boston.
